For the second event of the weekend, we had the Jaggo! Jaggo means “wake-up!” It is a pre-wedding ceremony that takes place usually the night before the wedding, however we did it two nights prior. During this ceremony, relatives of the bride and groom dance, eat food and perform rituals. Traditionally in the Indian culture, the bride has a separate celebration with her side of the family; however, since we were having a multi-cultural wedding, we decided to combine our two celebrations into one big festivity.
We added a few aspects of a traditional American rehearsal dinner into the Jaggo. We kicked off the event with casual pictures with the guests while everyone enjoyed cocktails and appetizers. Then Harinder’s side of the family performed traditional hymns and songs. We proceeded to serve a buffet (the most amazing Indian dishes) while a few of our close friends and relatives did speeches. After dinner and the speeches ended, we DANCED. Harinder’s side of the family did traditional Jaggo dances and then it was a party!!! We played mainly Indian music with a few hip hop songs in between. It was the perfect event to allow our guests to feel the love of our two cultures blending together.
We kept the décor simple with a welcome sign and colorful candle holders. All our friends and family were told to wear colorful clothing so we knew it was going to be vibrant and beautiful without a lot of outside decorations.
